Pacific nursing home sued for wrongful death

The son of a former Pacific Care Center resident has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the nursing home.

The lawsuit, filed Feb. 18 in Franklin County Circuit Court, alleges that negligence by staff at the assisted living facility resulted in the premature death on Aug. 9, 2024 of Catherine Gaulden.

After being admitted to Pacific Care Center for long-term care in August 2023, Gaulden was transferred to the facility’s skilled nursing wing in February 2024.

Prior to being admitted to the nursing home, Gaulden had already survived a stroke, was paralyzed on her right side, suffered from dementia and incontinence, and “was in a frail, defenseless, and dependent condition,” according to the suit.

aulden was “left in her urine and feces for multiple hours by Pacific Care Center staff” and “was not properly changed, hydrated, fed, medicated, rotated, or moved,” according to the petition.

On April 14, 2024, after being found unresponsive, Gaulden was admitted to SSM Health St. Clair Hospital in Fenton, where staff found she “was suffering from a stage 2 sacral bedsore, osteomyelitis, sepsis, dehydration, and found to be in a diabetic coma.”

Gaulden was ultimately transferred to hospice, where she died Aug. 9, 2024. The petition seeks damages in excess of $25,000. A Pacific Care Center representative declined to comment on the lawsuit Friday.
